SAILING AEOLIAN ISLANS IN SICILY, 22nd September – 29th September 2012

Magnificent Sicily was our HPYF 2012 destination! For most it was the first time visit and everyone was very excited. We started and finished in Portorosa and sailed to Lipari, Panarea, Stromboli, Salina and Vulcano. We witnessed Stromboli erupting! We visited charming Italian towns and anchored in beautiful bays. Some of us flew to Palermo and spent a day there, sightseeing this fantastic town with so much to see. The others flew to Catania, the closest airport to Portorosa.

We capped the number of boats to 13, and as always, the booking was on a first-come-first-served basis. As the fleet was fairly small, we have decided not to book any meals ahead (apart from Welcome and Prize giving evenings) but instead, have a list of suggestions ready in advance with the itinerary. The Welcome party was organized i Portorosa bar, by the 2011 winners, the Dutch team (YES AGAIN!) led by our Comodoress, Carolyn. The Prize giving party was in the most charming restaurant in Portorosa, on the beach. With this kind of environment, no wonder that the dance lasted well into the night.

‘The usual format of mixing the sailing races with swimming, socialising, cooking and partying will be retained’ …. said John Hall Hall.

HPYF FORMAT FOR THE WEEK

All crews will be expected to arrive in time for the welcome party at 7:30 pm on the first Saturday of the event. Ideally, all check-ins will be completed on Saturday to allow a prompt getaway on Sunday morning after a general briefing and feedback discussion. A typical day will entail breakfast ashore or on board followed by a general discussion to share the plan for the day with all crews. When the conditions are suitable we will hold a race, normally 1-4 hours long. A stop for lunch and swimming will normally be possible. We will berth together where possible each evening, either in an anchorage or marina. The choice to eat on board or ashore will be at each crew’s discretion, and hopefully afterwards there will be one or more gatherings on the boats until late (or very late!!).
The week is suitable for crew members of all abilities and if you join as an individual we will find a boat suitable for your abilities.
